Job loss can be painful. Whether it comes through a lay-off, sack or premature retirement. The negative impact on your finances is the same you’re likely to experience a sack in your work life so, you have to learn how to deal with it. Here’re some suggestions:

  1. The loss of a job is not a death sentence. That’s the first thing to realize. So, face the reality and look for viable alternatives.
  2. Take time to find out what led to your sack, and make amends if it was your fault. You’ve to be very realistic.
  3. You can start a small business with your pay – off if you are able to launch out on your own; otherwise find another job.
  4. Look for a niche you can explore and latch on to that, to create a viable business for you; that’s how you could penetrate the market with what you have to offer.
  5. Avoid luxuries and other unrealistic expenses at this time because you are out of job. Buy only what’s essential.
  6. Save as much as you can because no income is coming in now.
  7. Don’t take wild risks in spending decisions, as you seek to start on your own. You must be careful to invest in tried and tested business that guarantees returns.
  8. If you choose to look for a new job; start in earnest, by selling your skills through the right channels, especially through the internet.
  9. The Bible says, “whatever your hands find to do, just do it” (paraphrase). You don’t have to be too selective. Just get on with what’s available until you stabilize well enough to get the right job.
  10. If you are married, carry your wife along in any major decision you choose to take. You also need to seek professional advice, taking advantage of job counselors to lead you to the right path.
