Nigeria drops to 31 in latest FIFA Ranking
At a time when the three top teams in Africa – Senegal, Morocco, and Tunisia moved up in their ranking, Nigeria’s Super Eagles dropped by a step to be ranked 31 in the June 2002 FIFA Ranking released yesterday by the world football governing body.
Despite recording two wins in their 2023 AFCON qualifiers with a record 10-0 win over Sao Tome and Principe, the coach Jose Peseiro-tutored side still maintained their fourth spot in Africa.
Starting the year as the 32nd rated team in the world in February 2022, the team improved to 30 in March but in the latest rating, the three-time African champion dropped to 31.

Sighs, hisses as FG reverses two-year basketball ban
Stakeholders have lamented D’Tigress’ 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup miss in the wake of the Federal Government’s decision to lift a two-year ban placed on international basketball, The PUNCH reports.
The ban was reversed after the sports minister Sunday Dare and other stakeholders lobbied for it to be rescinded, a top ministry official Ismaila Abubakar told reporters.

FIFA approves 26-player squads for Qatar 2022
FIFA will allow countries to select up to 26 players for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, increasing the maximum squad size by three for the 21 November-18 December tournament.
The number of players to be included on the final list has been increased to at least 23 and a maximum of 26,” FIFA said in a statement.
World football’s governing body said the decision to expand squads was made “given the need to retain additional flexibility due to the unique timing” of this year’s competition, which will interrupt the European club season.
CHOGM: Dare attends Commonwealth Ministerial Task Force Meeting
Nigeria’s Youth and Sports Minister, Hon. Sunday Dare attended the 5th edition of the Commonwealth Youth Ministerial Task Force meeting yesterday in Rwanda.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the Rwandan Capital city of Kigali.
The three-day Commonwealth Youth Forum (CYF) which started on Saturday brought together about 350 young persons from across the Commonwealth to discuss the adverse impacts of climate change, conflict and COVID-19, which disproportionately hit young people by cutting employment, training inter alia.
