The copyright ownership fight between new act Berri Tiga and comedian Carter Efe, over the hit single ‘Machala’, is not about to abate anytime soon.
Both of them have released videos that has gone viral on social media. The lanky and dark-skinned comedian, Carter Efe affirmed that he was never a musician, but a lover of good music and long time fan of star singer, Whizkid. He explained how he wrote the controversial song and contacted Berri Tiga, whom he described as up and coming singer to feature on the song.
“The song Machala is my own and because I’m not a musician, I contacted Berri Tiga to come and feature on the song. After the song started receiving rave reviews, I also paid an influencer N3.5 million to promote and push the song higher.
“Now, I am surprised that this artist that I featured and his management, have started claiming ownership of my song. They want to rip me and take the song from me. It won’t happen. Greed and wickedness are the bane of the Nigerian music industry,” the comedian lamented.
On his part, Berri Tiga is equally, claiming ownership of the song, adding that he sang almost all the verses of the song.
“I did the song Machala. I sang it. After it has become a hit, Carter Efe is asking me not to perform it anywhere. He went ahead to offer me a ridiculous 5 percent of the financial returns on the song. That is greedy and cannot be accepted,” he explained.
However, music fans are now divided on which side of the fence to sit. Some are accusing Berri Tiga and his management of trying to take what does not belong to them. Even advising the new musician to work harder and release his own song.
Some others have lambasted Carter Efe of greed over the alleged 5 percent offer he made to the singer. They wondered how the song would have become a hit without the big roles of the singer.
