Football enthusiasts and grassroots football promoters in Lagos, are in exuberant mood, ahead of the planned Abisco Football Championship, scheduled to begin November, 2022.
Ahead of the planned football championship, tagged Abisco Cup 2022, a press conference was held Monday, at the hall of Mosan Okunola LCDA, in Lagos.
The colourful ceremony was a twin event, that included the unveiling of the giant gold trophy for the football competition, as well as, the presentation of the delegation of the famous Santos Futbol Club of Brazil to the Executive Chairman of Mosan Okunola LCDA, Hon. Princess Olabisi Adebajo.
Speaking on behalf of the organisers of the football tournament, Miss Deborah Okediadi, began by explaining that it would be a free-age and a 32-team competition. Which would begin with a knockout series, that would see 16 winners qualify to play in the group stage, of four teams per group. And the top two teams in each group moving into the quarter finals and thereon to the final match of the competition.
On her part, Hon. Olabisi Adebajo, who is the sponsor and brain behind the competition, expressed her excitement and desire to host the football competition, which she stated was one of her several initiatives to stem youth restiveness and of course, help the talented youths in and around the Mosan Okunola LCDA, achieve their sporting dreams.
Also during the event, members of the famous Santos Futbol Club of Brazil, who are on a second-ever visit to Nigeria, were presented to the guests. The Brazillians praised the sponsor of the competition and prayed for its success.
The head of the organisers, and national chairman of Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Rev. Samuel Ikpea, while praising Hon. Olabisi Adebajo, for her unflinching commitment to youth empowerment, also revealed that apart from the usual prizes to deserving teams and individual players, the best player of the tournament would go on an all-expense free football trip to Brazil.
