Top Nigerian female Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has come out to state how she would love to be remembered. Tiwa who was caught on a video on the social media, also ascribed the growing fame and fortune of Nigerian music stars, to the innate tough characters of Nigerians. And of course, the musical influence of late Afrobeat King Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Responding to a question on why she thinks Nigerian artists are doing better than other African artists, Tiwa said, “Why do I think Nigerian artists are succeeding a lot more than other African artists, I know Nigerians are tough. We’re hustlers. And I think it’s also because of the genre called Afrobeats. And you know, the godfather of Afrobeat is Fela Kuti. Maybe that’s another reason.”
Continuing in her responses to varying questions, she remarked that not a few Nigerian female singers are doing well.
“There are some female artistes doing it well out there. Myself, Teni, Simi, Yemi Alade, SMD, Niyola and others. But there’s still room for others too, to excel. What we’re doing, I believe is breaking boundaries, so that the next generation would not have to go through what went through to succeed.
“It’s like how Fela paved way for guys like us. Whatever you do in life, you always have to leave a legacy, so that people coming behind you don’t have to suffer or face similar hardships like you did.”
She went ahead to state how she would love to be remembered. “I want to be remembered as Tiwa Savage, an African woman, who didn’t take no for an answer. A woman who literally went into the world and was a flagbearer. You know, Nigeria and Africa as a whole, and gave hope to every other African girl out there. That if I can do it, they can do it better,” she added.
