Songs star, Stella Ada Monye, best known for her Afrofunk hit, Okomi ye, on the defunct Tabansi Records label, is set to stage a comeback, despite a break from the recording circuit, due to her son, Amaechi’s long illness which set her back.
Known for her sexy, velvet voice and other hit songs like Arigo Samba; Stella has picked herself up, and is determined to relaunch with a new gospel album titled Iyanu (Wonder in Yoruba). The singer, who sings in English, and Yoruba, mainly is one of the big stars of the ‘80s/’90s.
Musically speaking, what are you doing at the moment?
Musically, I just begun to get my groove back, and the process is gradual.
Why have you not been releasing albums?
I have recorded my first gospel album, titled Iyanu. I hope to go into full evangelism now, and I’m excited.
Which of the current stars would you like to work with?
When you’re working for God, you just do as you are led. It’s the inspiration of the Holy spirit that leads one to take such decision.
Do you think artistes of your generation are taking advantage of digital music?
Everything is evolving. It’s not business as usual. The record companies are no longer there. It’s the young lads that are doing it on their own with lots of money in place.
Why do many artistes self –produce?
That’s the trend now.
What can be done to revive the music industry, afterall sports is still functioning?
The social arena is gradually evolving, people are still very careful. This situation will pass and we would be back to normal.
How’s your son, Amaechi now? His plight has taken a toll on your career, obviously.
I like the fact that my son’s situation has drawn me closer to God. And that’s what matters. Hmmm! God will perfect his healing. He will surely perfect what he has started.
