The Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) has warned the Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports Development against tampering with the 2019 constitution of the Nigeria basketball Federation (NBBF), saying it would not accept any amendment to the document.

FIBA letter to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Chief Sunday Dare, last month and signed by its president, Hamane Niang and Secretary General, Andreas Zagklis is against the backdrop of the self-inflicted crisis over the elective congress earlier fixed for October 30, 2021 in Warri.

While a section loyal to former president, Tijani Umar is moving constitutional amendments few days to election, the incumbent president, Ahmed Musa Kida insisted that the process for the amendment must follow lay down procedure as enshrined in the 2019 constitution endorsed by FIBA.

Umar, using his influence in the president ensured that the elections were postponed. After reconciliatory meetings were held, January 30, 2022 was agreed for the elective congress to hold.

But FIBA insisted that any election that was contrary to the tenets of the 2019 constitution would not be accepted to it.

Consequently, FIBA in the letter to the Sports Minister maintained its stance as contained in its November 10 letter where it unequivocally stated that National Member Federations (NMF) must manage their affairs independently without the influence of third parties and ensure that their officials were elected or appointed under a democratic process in line with Article 9.7 of the FIBA’s General Statutes.
