Beauty Therapist, Iyanu Okusanya, has joined the growing list of BEATS contributing editors. Her column debuts next week. Below, she tells her story:

Often times we find that we go through the hustle and bustle of life that we sometimes forget to take care of the body in which we live. Our bodies are complex machines and if not well taken care of will start to break down and deteriorate. This is why I am so passionate about beauty, holistic and complimentary therapies. My great passion is bringing healing to many people and giving them a great sense of wellbeing.

I obtained my qualifications in England at the Oxford International College Of Beauty where I studied Beauty Therapy, Body Therapy, Hot Stone Massage, Lava Shell Massage, Indian Head Massage, Aromatherapy, Thermal Auricular Therapy and Reflexology.

I obtained CIDESCO (Comité International d’Esthétique et de Cosmétology) qualification in Beauty Therapy. The CIDESCO qualification is the highest qualification in the Beauty and Spa Industry and it is recognised in over 40 countries across five continents. With this qualification, I can work in any of these countries internationally.

I also have CIBTAC (Confederation Of International Beauty Therapy & Cosmetology) qualifications. CIBTAC Level 2 in Beauty Therapy and CIBTAC Level 3 in Body Therapy, along with the Diplomas I acquired for the other courses I studied whilst I was in college.

At the end of my course, I received the CIBTAC SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD and the CIBTAC STUDENT OF THE YEAR AWARD as a result of hard work and excellence.

My education background includes the following:

° Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Lagos

° Basic Presentation Certification from the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria Training School

° Makeup Course Certification from the MUD (Makeup Designory) Academy

° Teachers’ Grade II Certificate from the National Teachers’ Institute.

After working in the private sector for some years, I decided to pursue my dream and start my own business after training as a Makeup Artist at the Makeup Designory. My work included Nigerian Traditional Bridal Makeup, Contemporary Bridal Makeup, Special Occasion Makeup, Henna Designs on hands and feet, Makeup for Photo-shoots etc.

I tried my hands on theatrical and special effects makeup and carried out a lot of research on skincare and beauty long before I had a formal education in the industry. I have been in the beauty industry for over 10 years.

I am a wife, mother and entrepreneur who is driven by passion for what I love.

I will choose to be a Beauty Therapist over and over again. It is a very rewarding and fulfilling career.

I love my job.
