The importance of New Year is the new chance it avails for people to critically assess their progress in the previous year, analyze their approaches, appraise their performances, and make plans on how to become a better version of themselves to get a better result in their endeavors.
I am convinced you have made enough list of what you intend to achieve in 2022 or perhaps you are still adjusting your list of goals, it is all fine. Everyone has a list of things to accomplish in the New Year and this is not a bad idea, but it should also not be about just listing the goals for the New Year. You should make deliberate efforts to actualize them and be a better version of yourself. Because the better you become, the better you achieve.
In our everyday life’s engagement, there is always a need to improve on who we are, if we must experience any positive change in what we do. Most people are often not aware of the critical importance and the major role of a winning personal brand in everything they do both in life and business. They are only worried about getting a new thing done without a good focus on becoming a new version of themselves.
Everyone is actually responsible for the outcome of his life. The gap between who we are and who we can be is our personal responsibility, we must fill it up. The choice of moving on to becoming who we are meant to be, or settling down with who we are at the moment is sorely ours to make. The decision between transiting from where we are to where we can be, or coasting where we are in our defined comfort zone is what separates success from failure, greatness from mediocrity, and excellence from average.
When you’re considering how to improve yourself, it’s useful to think of three layers (think of layers of an onion) among many important layers.
1. The inner layer consists of mindset:
Simply put, a mindset is a way of thinking. It is an individual’s thought pattern or mental attitude. Your mindset is your interpretation of situations and everything around you. It shapes what you do and how you do it. For example, if you have the habit of thinking negatively, it is because you have a negative mindset. There is therefore a need to work on your mindset if you are serious about improving on yourself. Take steps to adjust the way you think. When you change your mindset, you might realize you have more control over your circumstances than you previously thought. Developing a positive mindset in life improves the quality of our lives. This is because of the direct impact of how we think on who we truly are. Every real change must begin from within if it must be a lasting change. There is therefore a need to have a paradigm shift to alter the trajectory of our lives. Having the right mindset in the pursuit of any worthwhile goal is very important and this is one of the reasons most people achieve success at whatever they do while others fail repeatedly. Successful men and women like Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bezos, Albert Einstein among others emerge global relevance because they first transformed their mindset to become a person that is worth a global attention.
2. The second layer consists of Value and skills:
Becoming a person of value demands embracing a lifelong pursuit of learning and personal development. The process of understanding and developing your full potential. The extent to which you are committed to adding value to yourself through a committed learning determines the extent to which you grow and achieve your goals. Every raw material has little or no value. It only becomes valuable after it has been refined. Dare to build yourself a self-refinery to move from where you are to where you need to be to achieve your big goals. This could be hard but it’s rewarding. Daily ask yourself, “What do I need to learn to do to become a person of value?”
Life is a learning curve for everyone; so you should be open to learning, relearning, and unlearning. The importance of education cannot be overemphasized in one’s growth journey. You can decide to educate yourself through reading books or learning a new skill. Reading helps widen our horizon and also opens our mind to different ideas and experiences. Going out of your comfort zone to learn something new like a skill or language is also a feasible idea to being a better person, no one is too old to be educated.
3. The outer layer consists of quality relationship and network:
It is often unfortunate that people who are willing to achieve great goals and dreams both in life and business often don’t have strong interpersonal skills or network to make their big goal a reality. I have seen a high level of frustration from people in this category. People who have beautiful dreams but cannot make them happen. They don’t realize that everything in life and business requires relationships and quality network to thrive. Sometimes, to effectively build quality and relevant relationships you need to force yourself to go beyond people in your immediate circle, and those you know well, to contact and nurture a real relationship with at least one new person that is critical to the goal you want to achieve. Also, effective relationships require reciprocity – not a one-way half-hearted effort. You need to offer and deliver help. We connect easily with important people when we are value carriers. This is because no one loves to be identified with mediocrity. You need to be a person of value to attract valuable people. You also need to build a constituency of relationships with people who have shared beliefs, interests, and ambitions. You don’t want to spend your lifetime with people who aren’t going the same direction with you. That is why you need to know what you want so as to know the people you need in getting it done. Collaborating with such people on solving shared social problems will turn them into engaged advocates of your dreams and goals, and also make them your most powerful allies in building other relationships.
Keep improving. Your success is sure!
