FOOTBALL is so unpredictable as Egypt’s ouster of hosts Cameroun in Thursday’s semi-final has shown.
Cameroun were top favourites to win the trophy, not Egypt with wobbly performances that include that opening game loss to Nigeria.
Egypt are now on the verge of an unprecedented eighth title. Cameroun denied them the honour in the 2017 final. On their part the hosts had thought they could claim their sixth title to close the gap that Egypt’s dominance poses.
The expectations have gone in the of the semi-final that penalty kicks finally decided. Camerounian fans are surely disappointed.
Senegal won the other semi-final over Burkina Faso to set up a final that will pitch Liverpool team mates Salah and Sadio Mané against themselves for their country. Who will prevail?
While Egypt want another title, Senegal want their first title after losing two finals – to Cameroun in 2002, and to Algeria in 2019.
Sunday’s final will see fireworks that capture the ambitions of both sides. As they say in Zimbabwe, football is a round object, it can go to any direction. The same can be said of this final.
