Guitarist, Paul Tao, was popular as the most active showman in the band of Miliki King, Chief Commander, Ebenezer Obey. He used to strut with his imposing frame, and his dexterity as a guitarist gave the Miliki, sound a distinctive melody.
In a lengthy interview with BEATS, the tall, gentle, and patently shy musician, talked extensively about his pedigree and musical journey. Asked how he got into Obey’s band, Paul said: “I ran into Chief Commander Obey when he was recording “Eyi Yato” (one of his landmark albums), in 1979.
“I was home, and around 2 am, a colleague knocked at my door. I and my friend infused new ideas into Chief Obey’s new LP (Eyi Yato). So, this was my first recording with him and the Commander was impressed. That was how I became part of his band.
Tao’s guitar playing and creative licks with his shake the foundation stage acts and superb musicianship gave much life to Obey’s music in the 90s. He became a standout member like the famous Monday John, the popular solo guitar player whose nursery rhymes were a trademark of Obey’s evergreen recordings of the ’70s through ’80s.
Paul Tao is now a music minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, band. Worshippers at the Camp cannot but notice the tall, vibrant guitar player who normally struts the stage when on bandstand.
He spoke extensively on his life and musical career in the interview to be published soon.
