The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Pastor E.A. Adeboye, just as the euphoria of his 80th birthday settled, announced the creation of a directorate of Politics and Governance in his mega-church, to coordinate and mobilize members to support RCCG members, who are running for elective office.
This is long – overdue as every political office contender always covets the support of the influential preacher. RCCG has appointed one Pastor Odesola as the head of the Directorate. Coordinators are being appointed in all the parishes of the church, which is good news to Christendom.
Although, many observers see this Directorate as a tacit endorsement of the Vice President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, a prominent Redeemer and former Pastor of the Banana Island branch; this is not true as the VP is yet to express his intention to contest as being widely speculated. Even, the front-page story published by a national daily during the week in which, Prof Osinbajo was alleged to have informed his boss, President Muhammadu Buhari of his 2023 quest has been refuted by the media aide of the VP.
Other mega-churches are likely to emulate RCCG by putting up structures to mobilize Christians for the brethren who are running for political offices, as a counter-force to the grossing influence of Islamists on the polity.
