After the APC, PDP, and Labour party produced their Presidential candidates, we thought the stage was set for a three-way race until Rev Chris Okotie came up with his Proposition for the establishment of a Government of National Reconciliation and Reconstruction which he said, should govern on an Interim basis, with a sweeping mandate to give Nigeria a new system of government.
According to Okotie, this Interim Government would resolve all the problems plaguing the country and reconcile all the centrifugal and centripetal forces that make it impossible to move Nigeria forward.
The three standard-bearers of the mainline parties are not bringing anything new to the hospital table. They are saying the same thing in three different ways. Moreover, Tinubu, Atiku, and Obi have been in power at different times without making any significant impact, even when they functioned at lower levels of government. How would they be able to recreate a new Nigeria from the debris of the present ruin?
Okotie’s argument is valid if we consider the fact that the problem with this country derives from the faulty structure, the wrong mindset of the leaders, and a constitution that is alien, unworkable, and impossible to implement in Nigeria.
Whoever emerges president in 2023 cannot do anything different than the present and past leaders because he would be encumbered by many extant structural problems that inhibit smooth governance.
We cannot be doing the same thing, particularly with the same set of people, and expect a different result. None of the three musketeers seeking our mandate can take Nigeria out of the ditch unless they bring a revolutionary governance template.
Only Okotie is thinking along this line which is why his admonition should be heeded.
