The Chairman of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), Orits Wiliki has decried lawlessness in the Sector, while urging members of the association to update their licenses.
Wiliki made this appeal recently after his reelection as the Chairman, of the Board of MCSN.
While talking about the need to educate one another in the Sector, Wiliki said, “We take this opportunity to inform and educate all users of musical works and sound recordings in the country and all around the world that the provisions of section 39 of the copyright act 2004, “COSON” is not a collective management organisation known to the law as it does not hold the approval or license of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC). NCC is the Federal Government regulatory agency charged with the responsibility of licensing and approving collective management organisation in Nigeria.”
“We have been duly informed that certain cases instituted by and, or behalf of the said “COSON” with regards to its approval or status as a collective management organisation has been dismissed by the courts.
“Some of the cases are: Suit No. FHC/L/CS/425/2020: COSON & Ors vs. NCC & Ors and Suit No. FHC/EN/CS/58/2018: COSON &ORS vs. NCC &ORS”
He further called on all existing licenses and users of music in general to perfect their standing and update their licenses from the society as the society will be wielding the legal stick against any recalcitrant infringers of copyright in musical works and sound recordings across the federation of Nigeria.
