Afrobeat star Seun Kuti is unrelenting in the protection and promotion of his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s socio-political and musical legacies.
In a recent interview on Sunrise, a Channels TV programme, Seun, while responding to a question, refuted claims that he inherited the world famous Egypt ’80 Band formed by his late father.
“It’s wrong to say, I inherited the Egypt ’80 band. No, I joined the band when I was 8 years old. As a kid, I was touring with my dad and the band. And believe me, I thought it was the best job in the world. With all the good foods, clothes, beautiful women and so much money coming to my father then,” he said amidst rancourous laughters.
Seun Kuti who was full of praises for the modern day Nigerian and African music artists, however expressed his disappointment over the attempts of the new generation artists to be too western in their music and vibes.
“They are over-killing it. Amongst them, I want to particularly praise Sheyi Vibes, for displaying his Africanness in his latest video. You could see him chanting incantations in one of the scenes, in the ways of the traditional African way.
Speaking further, Seun Kuti disclosed that he has a lot of big plans for the year 2023. According to the widely travelled musician, “The Year 2023 is definitely a big one for me. This year, I’m dropping my new album. I’m doing some movies. It’s gonna be a big year for me and my fans,” he enthused confidently.
