The former Chairman of the Police Service Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Chief Dr. Simon Okeke OFR, OON, Ochendo Amichi, has posited that the President of Nigeria, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu should use his constitutional Veto Power to release the detained Leader of the Independent People Of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
He made this clear during an Interactive Session with a Group of select Journalists from some Media Houses at his Akartar Lodge Country Home in Amichi Nnewi South LGA of Anambra State, recently. He referred to it as a Political Solution. In his words:”Nnamdi Kanu ought not to have been arrested in the first place. He was just an Agitator.
He was not armed and there are no bullets in his mouth. There are so many armed Agitators in the country going about freely without any form of molestation. Why should the authorities arrest the one that is using only words of mouth to agitate?” Commenting on the state of the Nation, Ochendo deplored the outcome of the last General Election, stating that the man adjudged to have won the election was denied.
He therefore called on Ndigbo to start observing the 29th of May every year as the day Democracy was mudered in Nigeria. He described 2023 as a year of turbulence and disaster both economically and politically.
He pointed out that both INEC and the Judiciary woefully disappointed Nigerians by coming up with a judgement that was contrary to the people’s expectations. He however assured that someday, justice would prevail and good would triumph over evil.
Ochendo recalled that: “For the first time in the history of Nigeria, the Igbos, the Hausas and the Yorubas spoke with one voice and voted for the Labour Party Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi and everyone expected that he would be given the mantle of governance, but the Constitution was battered by INEC and the Judiciary.”” He deplored the first statements made by the President when he ascended the office that he would continue from where his Predecessor stopped.
In other words:”Just as the Former Government favoured the Fulanis, this present one will favour the Yorubas. So any tribe that enters will go ahead to favour his own people. Thereby excluding a major tribe like Igbo in the Political Equation. This is a very dangerous trend and it must be revisited. It must be noted that the more you exclude the Igbos from governance the more you fuel the Biafran agitation.” .
Commending the efforts of the South East Governors so far in ensuring peace and security in the Region, he stated thus:”I must say there’s relative peace in the South East this time around. I must commend the efforts of the South East Governors in containing the insecurity situation in the Region.
The security will be stronger if the Constitution can be amended to give each Governor the right of being the real Chief Security Officer of his State, by giving each State a State Police. I call on the Governors to work in harmony in securing the Region.” He noted that it was during his tenure as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission that he proposed and implemented the idea of having 6 Deputy Inspector Generals of Police ( DIGs) from each of the 6 Geopolitical Regions, that is why the South East was able to produce an Inspector General of Police.
On the fuel subsidy, he commended the measure, but insisted that it was wrongly timed. He pointed out that a palliative system should have been put in place before removing the subsidy. He finally called on Nigerians not to lose hope as there’s a silver lining on the horizon.
